About the Barbour County Sheriff's Office

The Barbour County Sheriff's Office serves the people of Barbour County, Alabama — a community of roughly 25,000 residents across southeast Alabama, from the county seat in Clayton to Eufaula, Clio, Louisville, and the rural communities in between. As the county's chief law enforcement agency, the Sheriff's Office is responsible for patrol and emergency response, criminal investigations, courthouse and courtroom security, civil process, sex-offender registration and compliance, and the operation of the Barbour County Jail. Our deputies and staff work around the clock to keep every corner of the county safe. The Barbour County Jail houses individuals awaiting trial and serving sentences. Through partners like Pay Tel and Inmate Canteen, families can stay connected with incarcerated loved ones by phone, messaging, and video visitation, and can support them through commissary deposits. Under the leadership of Sheriff Tyrone Smith, the office is committed to spending the public's resources wisely — investing in training, technology, and community partnerships that help deputies respond quickly, solve crimes, and earn the trust of the people they serve. The Sheriff's Office is headquartered at 24 Robertson Airport Road in Clayton, Alabama. Like many of you, I was born and raised right here in Alabama. I grew up in Eufaula and have called it home my entire life. My law enforcement career began when I graduated from the Southwest Alabama Police Academy and joined the Eufaula Police Department (EPD) as a Patrol Officer — the start of a calling in which I have always seen real honor and value.
During my years at EPD, I earned my credentials as a Field Training Officer (FTO) and a Traffic Homicide Investigator (THI) before becoming an Investigator in the Criminal Investigation Division. There, I investigated burglaries, robberies, sexual crimes, and other felony offenses. That work brought me into people’s lives during some of their hardest moments — whether I was meeting a victim, a witness, a family being notified, or the person accused. How I treated each of them mattered, and I carried that responsibility with me every single day I wore the badge.
In 2007, I left EPD to join the Barbour/Bullock County District Attorney’s Office as an Investigator, working alongside other agencies on serious criminal cases. I served as coordinator of the Pre-Trial Diversion program, and from 2015 to 2017 I represented the District Attorney’s Office on the Drug Court Board — a program built to help people facing drug-related charges and those working to overcome addiction. In February 2017, I began serving as a Probation and Parole Officer for the State of Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles.
For more than two decades, I have devoted myself to building a safer, stronger community for my family and for yours. On January 14, 2019, I was honored to take office as your Sheriff.
My goals today remain what they have always been: to give the people of Barbour County what they deserve — someone who will fight for them without fail, lead with consistent honesty and fairness, and never compromise when it comes to the integrity of the law.
