Privacy Policy
Last updated October 4, 2026
Our commitment
The Barbour County Sheriff’s Office respects the privacy of everyone who uses this website. This policy explains what information the website collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. It applies only to barbourcountysheriff.org.
Information you choose to give us
We collect personal information only when you choose to send it — for example, when you email us, call us, or submit a form. We use that information only to respond to you or to carry out the law enforcement purpose of your request.
Anonymous tips
The tip form does not require your name or contact information. The form is set up so that it does not record your IP address or device details with your tip. Since October 3, 2026, the tip form does not store tips on this website — they are delivered directly to designated Sheriff’s Office staff. If you choose to include your name or contact details, we may use them to follow up. If you want to remain anonymous, do not include anything that identifies you.
Information collected automatically
Like most websites, our hosting and security providers automatically process basic technical information when you visit — such as your IP address, browser type, the pages requested, and the date and time — to deliver the site, keep it secure, and block attacks. This information is not used to identify individual visitors except as part of investigating misuse of the website or as required by law. We do not use analytics or advertising trackers, and we do not sell or rent any information.
Cookies
This website uses only the cookies needed to run and protect it. Our security provider (Cloudflare) may set cookies to tell people from automated bots, including on our forms. The map on our Contact and home pages is provided by Google Maps, which may set its own cookies; Google’s privacy policy applies to that content.
Public records
The Sheriff’s Office is a public agency. Information you send us may become a public record under the Alabama Open Records Act (Code of Alabama § 36-12-40) and may be released unless an exemption applies — for example, information that is part of a criminal investigation or is otherwise protected by law.
Sharing information
We do not share personal information except with other government and law enforcement agencies when needed to carry out our duties, when required by law or court order, or to protect the safety of the public or our staff.
Websites we link to
This site links to services run by other organizations, including the county inmate roster and pistol permit renewal portal (County Government Services), video visitation (Pay Tel), commissary deposits (Inmate Canteen), the state and national sex offender registries, and our social media pages. Those sites have their own privacy policies, and we are not responsible for their practices.
Children
This website is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them online.
Security
We use reasonable safeguards, including encrypted (HTTPS) connections and security monitoring. No method of transmitting information over the internet is completely secure, so please do not send sensitive information by email.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it was last changed.
